Water: A great Blessing

Water, Its Importance for Human Life and Necessity to Save Water:

Water is the most important thing in our life. Our body contains 65% water. When
coming to geographical importance, it covers more than 70 % of the earth but the sad
thing is that the freshwater part is only 3% and remaining is salty water. Life started a
million years ago, only with the help of water. Every human civilizations started and
flourished where water was abundant. Water availability was the main reason of
migration in human history. Water is also essential for agricultural requirements.

Chemical Composition:

Water is made up of two colorless gases, hydrogen and oxygen combination. Water
molecules (H 2 O) include two atoms from hydrogen and one atom from oxygen.
Hydrogen is the lightest gas in all chemicals while oxygen, on the other hand, is 16
times heavier and the most abundant gas on earth after nitrogen. Hydrogen is the word
derived from the Greek word 'hydro' meaning water. One gallon of water weighs
approximately about 4 kg. Meanwhile, salty seawater weighs three times more than
simple water due to salt added.

Forms of Water:

Water does not have a definite shape of its own but it takes the shape of the container
in which it is poured into. When it comes to the different forms in which the water is
found due to different temperatures on earth so they are solid, liquid and gas. There are
different changes of state that happen with water when it changes its form. In this
process, first water when stored at its freezing point of 0* turns into ice and when the ice
is set to room temperature it loses heat to surroundings and melts down to form liquid
water which is most abundantly used in the world. Lastly, at the boiling point of 100*
water evaporates up and turns into vapor which is a gas.

Underground water:

Rainwater always seeps into the ground. It goes down through the soil pores and rock
crevices and stops to the last point because there is a rock in form of a rough floor. This
underground layer of permeable rock that contains water is known as Aquifer or Water
Table and the water which is stored here is called underground water. This underground
water can be found in different regions in different elevations. This underground water
can be extracted using a water well.

 Uses of Water:

The human body requires at least 2-3 liters of water to survive out but most people drink
1-2 liters of water. However, water can also be found in eatables such as drinks, milk,
tea, eggs, and watermelon. Watermelon consists of 91% of water, eggs contain 74% of
water, and meat has 70 % of water in it. Moreover, water is also used for washing
clothes, cleaning of houses, washing utensils, bathing, toilet purposes, cooking, watering garden, generating hydroelectricity, irrigating crops and also for industries and
factories use plenty of water.

Importance of water in the human body:

Water in the human body regulates our body temperature, moistens out the tissues in
our eyes, nose, and mouth, protects body organs and tissues, carries nutrients and
oxygen to all our body cells, lubricates our joints, transportation of nutrients and
vitamins which are essential for digestion, helps create saliva, helps chemical reactions
process, improves blood circulation, helps lose weight, aids in cognitive function and
lessens the huge burden on our kidneys and liver by flushing out all the waste products.

 Water scarcity:

Ever-increasing human population with intensive water use demands, growing irrigation
water requirements due to increased food demand, increasing water pollution and
global warming/climate change are major factors contributing in increasing water
scarcity in the world. Glaciers which are one of most important sources of fresh water
are also melting very rapidly due to climate change and they are increasing the sea
level. Due to water scarcity, where many parts of Africa have to face problems like
droughts and hunger. Even in Europe and America there are problems of urban water
supply. American state California faces water shortage mostly. There to stop wasting
water, watering the garden more than two times in a week is known to be a sin and
people get arrested.

Saving water:

Today, due to technological advancements the world is experimenting on those
methods which can save the water or reduce its wastage. Seawater is being made
drinkable by using desalination plants and filtering out the salt but this is an expensive
project. Apart from this, the sewage water from homes is being filtered and passed
through filters to make it useable for agriculture and industrial purposes once again.
Excess rainwater can be saved by building dams. Taking a few steps to save water can
result in a good water supply. A few steps at home to save water are the following:

1- Install dual flush toilets in your house and always fix the water leakages in tanks or
pipelines or taps by checking them twice a week.

2- Turn of the tap while brushing your teeth or washing your hands and use less water
by bathing in a tub instead of a shower.

3- Water your garden with less water in a hose and only twice a week.

4- Instead of a hose wash your car and courtyards with buckets of water. Wash the
clothes and dishes when there is a full load and use automatic dishwashers and
washing machines to save water.

5- Don't throw garbage and waste material in the water, instead use the three rs to recycle
and again use it.
